Mental ill health costs UK employers approximately £56 billion each year and has increased by 25% since 2019. Half of all employees have experienced at least one characteristic of burn out due to greater job demands and expectations, lack of social interaction and weak boundaries between work and home life.

Smart business owners, department heads and line managers across the UK are recognising the impact of poor mental health on company performance and looking for ways to mitigate the risk.

Those in sectors that are experiencing skills and labour shortages are doubly keen to invest in the wellbeing of their people, to attract and retain valuable talent by demonstrating a caring company culture.

Those that invest in wellbeing are rewarded fivefold

The association Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) estimates that for every £1 spent by employers on mental health interventions, employers could get back £5.30 in reduced absence, presenteeism, and staff turnover.

So, it’s great news that there are plenty of opportunities coming up to make a gesture that will enhance staff wellness and show your employees you care about them with a wellbeing gift box.

Investing in their wellbeing could be one of the best investments your business makes

Blue Monday – 16th January

Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January said to be the most depressing day of the year. It’s calculated using a formula that includes weather conditions, debt level, days passed since Christmas, time since new year’s resolutions have been broken, and generally low motivational levels.

Turn those frowns upside down with an employee giftbox/wellbeing box featuring goodies such as:

  • Positive affirmation cards – perhaps linked to your company values
  • Gym passes – exercise releases endorphins that help combat winter blues – why not pair it with some swanky branded workout kit
  • Colourful branded stationery – colour psychology links yellow and orange with hope and joy
  • Gift vouchers – for that beauty treatment, meal or fun day out they thought they had to put off until payday

Time to Talk Day – 2nd February

Time to Talk Day is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation, run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, in partnership with the Co-op. It’s a chance for friends, families, communities, and workplaces to come together and have an open conversation about mental health.

Create a talking point with a branded wellness gift box filled with items that support a healthy mind:

  • Mindfulness and meditation guides – help people find a moment of stillness
  • Branded journal and personalised pen – to release and record emotions on paper
  • Yoga equipment, access to yoga apps, or books – feel better, inside and out
  • Colouring books, puzzles or craft kits – quieten a busy mind

Valentine’s Day – 14th February

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for lovers. Did you know that in In Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela, Finland, Estonia and the Dominican Republic, it’s a celebration of friendship too?

Show your employees some warmth with a wellbeing pack that makes them feel special, filled with:

  • Beautiful flowers or a snazzy plant for their desk
  • A branded box of fine chocolates – personalised perhaps?
  • Tickets to see a romcom at the cinema – or whatever they fancy
  • Bottle of fizz or a customised cocktail/mocktail making kit

Boost morale = A boost in productivity

International Women’s Day – 8th March

Every year, International Women’s Day focuses on a different theme. This year, it’s #embraceequity. Organisers are calling on everyone to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion. They say, “Forging gender equity isn’t limited to women solely fighting the good fight. Allies are incredibly important for the social, economic, cultural, and political advancement of women.”

Show support for the women in your workforce and encourage allies with a pack containing:

  • Bespoke printed collateral related to an internal awareness raising campaign like the digital one we created for TD Synnex
  • Drinkware and clothing featuring your IWD campaign slogan or hashtag
  • Selected books on gender equality
  • Branded stationery to remind your teams to #embraceequity all year round

Stress Awareness Month – April

Stress Awareness Month has been held every April since 1992 to raise awareness of the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic.  It’s run by The Stress Management Society.

Just over a quarter of workers (26%) say they struggle to relax in their personal time because of work. Let THEMPC design and produce a staff wellbeing box to help them stay calm during the workday and unwind after hours. Why not include:

  • A branded mug and a selection of relaxing herbal teas
  • Self-care hamper containing products made with soothing essential oils
  • Stress balls or fidget toys featuring your company logo
  • Fitness wear and accessories – exercise is a proven stress buster

Mental Health Awareness Week – May

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 is happening 15 to 21 May and the theme for 2023 is ‘anxiety’. Organisers The Mental Health Foundation report that:

“Anxiety is also one of the most common mental health problems people face. According to a survey we carried out recently, a quarter of adults feel so anxious that it stops them from doing the things they want to do some or all of the time. Six in ten adults feel this way at least occasionally.”

Wellbeing and mindfulness gift boxes can form part of your company’s participation in Mental Health Awareness Week, featuring items such as:

  • Resources to help employees understand, manage and support anxiety in themselves and others
  • Meditation and mindfulness guides
  • A diary, notebook or journal with tips for coping with anxious feelings
  • Aromatherapy candles
